Glossary of Terms

Accreditation

It is the act of granting credit or recognition, especially to an educational institution or programs that offer by an educational institution that maintains suitable standards. It refers that they meet a general standard of quality.

Accreditation

It is the act of granting credit or recognition, especially to an educational institution or programs that offer by an educational institution that maintains suitable standards. It refers that they meet a general standard of quality.

Apostille

It is a form of authentication issued to public documents for use abroad in countries that participate in the Hague Convention of 1961.

Attested Copy / Certified True Copy

Attested Copy, also known as Certified Copy or Certified True Copy, it is a copy of an original document along with a signature from the certifying representative and a stamp from the issued authority who must confirm its authenticity.

Certificate / Diploma / Degree Certificate

Although Certificate, Diploma and Degree Certificate may have some differences on definition, they all generally refer to a document that is issued after completing classes and training in a specific area of skill or by passing an examination.

Course by Course Evaluation

Course by Course Evaluation is a comprehensive evaluation, includes the institution(s) attended, dates of attendance credential(s) earned, and U.S. equivalence(s). It also lists all courses detail (converted grade, semester units, course level in U.S. standard).

Course Description / Syllabus / Curriculum

Although Course Description, Syllabus (descriptive) and Curriculum (prescriptive) may have small differences on definition, they all generally refer to a document that is set out by an institution or exam board to describe detail information (including course content, breakdown of topics covered, theoretical hours, practical hours, etc.) for specific courses.

Course Level Identification

Course Level Identification refers to the level of a course. (Primary, Secondary, Post-secondary / undergraduate, Graduate.) Additionally, in Post-secondary level, each course can be designated as Lower or Upper Division depends on its content.

Credential

Credential is a qualification, achievement or competence, such as a certificate, degree, diploma or even completion of few courses.

Diploma Supplement

It is a document accompanying a European higher education diploma along with a standardized description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies completed by its holder.

Document by Document / General Evaluation

Document by Document Evaluation, also known as General Evaluation, is a basic evaluation, includes the institution(s) attended, dates of attendance credential(s) earned, and U.S. equivalence(s). It doesn’t list any courses detail.

Fraudulent Document

A document that has been determined as falsified, not authentic or not genuine.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

GPA is calculated based on the grades and units earned by individual. It represents the overall quality of the course work.

Notarized Document

Although Notarized Document generally refers to saying that the facts contained in the document are true (depends on where it was notarized), it will not always be accepted as an official original document for evaluation.

Official Document (Record of Study)

An authorized body (such as the awarding academic institution, ministry, technical board, or other institution.) issued document with student’s study information. It must include the embossed or fresh stamp, date, registrar’s signature, etc.

Original Document (Record of Study)

A document refers to a complete representation of a student’s study information. It must be the “First-generation” (not been copied) and bear the embossed or fresh stamp, date, registrar’s signature, etc.

Photocopy

It is a reproduced document upon the original.

Provisional Certificate

It is a preliminary document issued prior to the final / conventional certificate or diploma. Depending on the country, the provisional certificate may or may not be functional as the final/conventional one. In some cases, the provisional certificate may not be used as the proof of award of the degree.

Regionally Accredited

It often refers to an institution that is recognized by one of seven regional accrediting agencies in U.S.

Reissued Certificate / Diploma / Degree Certificate

An original reproduced placement of the initial original certificate, it must be issued by the institution or exam board.

Sealed

It often refers to enclosing official records by the institution of exam board with stamp and adhesive.

Semester Units

One semester usually lasts 15-18 weeks, and there fall, spring and summer (optional). A full-time student generally can earn 30 to 40 semester units in an academic year.

Temporary Diploma / Certificate

It often issues prior to the final graduation. Depending on the country, it may not be functional as the final /conventional certificate.

Transcript / Marksheet / Statement of Marks

A Transcript is sometimes referred to as a Marksheet or Statement of Marks. It is a certified record of a student throughout a course of study history with grades and units earned. Depending on the country, Transcript and Marksheet may exit simultaneously while transcript includes theoretical and practical hours and Marksheet includes scores achieved for each exam.

Translation

If your original documents are not in English, you will need either provide a translation from a certified / professional translator or apply a translation service with ERES. (Click here for a list of language ERES can translate in-house.)


*A certified / professional translator can be under a translation agency or an individual, but (s)he must hold a translator’s license. ATA Certified is the most common.

Unofficial Document (Record of Study)

A document (student’s study information) issued as reference and it often doesn’t include the emboss or fresh stamp, date, registrar’s signature, etc.

Verification

ERES may contact the institution directly to verify the authenticity of documents. Additionally, a verification may refer to check the accuracy of the translation.
